Cold Weather Camping – Things I’ve Learned

  • Check ahead of the local weather forecast prior to arrival.
  • Tires in good shape. Many roads in colder climates are steep as well. Icy steep roads can lead to trouble that you don’t want when pulling a travel trailer.
  • Fresh water supply lines can freeze over night. Check ahead with the campsite to determine the proper prevention protocols. Learn the benefits of a frost-proof water hydrant.
  • Work gloves for setup and takedown can be a real timesaver and save the toll on cold hands.
  • Top off propane tanks before leaving home. A lot more propane is burned when camping in the colder weather months as opposed to the summer when most is used for the stove and oven. Running the furnace to keep toasty at night has its cost.
  • Give yourself more time. Setup, takedown and everything in between; it is all just like braking distance. In colder climates, give yourself more time.
  • Bring in your awning at night.
  • Always assume the worst weather overnight, regardless of forecast.
